Quest for Candy on track for Dec. 28th turf start

Quest for Candy looks great, is training at the Fair Grounds, and is on track for a December 28th return to the races. We plan to enter her in a $49,000 NW1XMC optional claiming $50,000 race. Absent any set backs, we will be looking for her to start then.

Quest for Candy looks to return in late December

Quest for Candy departs for Fair Grounds this weekend and is currently on target for a 5.5 Furlong sprint for one-time winners on December 28th. This filly should handle the turf very well. She hits the ground light and is not large in her build.

Quest for Candy Wins First Time Out.

Two-Year-Old Filly blazes through first half and never looks back.

Candy showed her crisp workouts were not just for show as she took to the Remington Park track Wednesday night winning in her debut. (If you want to see her November 30th win, click here and select November 30th, Race #1.) Our Filly looked a little nervous in the paddock as a first-time starter, letting out a few apprehensive whinnies and anxiously shifting her weight from one leg to the other. However, when it came time to dance, she hit the floor like a pro.

Drawing post seven in a field of twelve, she entered the gate professionally. Surrounded by several well-bred competitors and a mix of first-time starters and others trying for the second or third time, much would be dependent on the break from the gate and the trip. Candy broke a little to her inside and went body-to-body with another early, but soon composed herself and moved aggressively to the front. She led the first quarter mile in a blistering 21 2/5ths seconds. After a 44 4/5ths screaming half mile, she and two others with racing experience led the balance of the field by nearly ten lengths. The fast pace certainly took its toll, but Candy stayed on top and looped right back to the Winner's Circle.

Everyone enjoys having an undefeated horse in their stable and as of last night Quest for Candy can claim that title for now. She earned a 66 Beyer Speed Rating for her performance and $16,443 in purse earnings for her owners. Candy will ship next to the Fair Grounds where we hope to see her continue her success.

Quest for Candy to Race Wednesday

Candy is in for the first time on Wednesday November 30th at Remington Park. She drew post position seven in a full field of twelve. Seven in the group are first time starters and the remaining five are very lightly raced with no stand out performers. Several of the fillies in the field are very well bred including a Tapit, Exchange Rate, and Yes It's True sired competitors. Her training times look as good as any in the group. As is always the case in a first time starter, much will be determined by the break and the trip. The contest is a $28,000 MSW on dirt going 5.5 furlongs.

To watch her race live click on this link to the Remington Park website and view her race at 6:30 CST on November 30th.

Quest for Candy Looks Like an Athlete

Candy took a break from training to model for some of her owners on Friday. A historically smaller filly, this girl has really grown up through the fall. She continues to train well and is on track for a first start on November 30th.

11/12/2011
Quest for Candy looking for first start

Candy continues to train well and is ready for her debut. Currently, the next opportunity for her is at Remington Park on November 30th, a 5.5 furlong sprint. We will continue to watch the overnights for possible alternatives sooner.

11/02/2011
Quest for Candy pointed towards November Race

Candy stretched out for an endurance building work this week, covering six furlongs in 1:15.44. She was the only horse to work six furlongs on Tuesday.

The final condition book for Remington is out and the next listed Maiden Special Weight going short is 5.5 furlongs on November 30th. Alternatively, Bret could choose to start her at a mile on December 10th, or could ship her to the Fair Grounds for a six-furlong Maiden on November 25th.

10/29/2011
Quest for Candy continues to post excellent works.

Last Saturday, as the boys in the stable were preparing to run, Quest for Candy lit up the track with another stellar work. She covered five furlongs in 1:01.06, 7th fastest of 42 at the distance that day. We should expect to see her debut in a sprint MSW in November.

10/21/2011
Backing off of this filly seems to have been the perfect medicine to get her back on track. Her last two works have been impressive, four furlongs in 47.64 (4th of 27 at the distance) and five furlongs in 59.76 (2nd of nine at the distance). Bret is being patient and wants to do what he believes is best in order for this filly to impress from the start. We are optimistic that she is a talented horse with a bright future. Expect her to race in November.

10/15/2011
Quest forCandy recorded another nice work this week, covering five furlongs on October 11th in 59.26 seconds, ranking 2nd of nine horses to train at the distance. Her half brother, Gamberoni, a gelding by Langfuhr won a seven furlong claiming race at Charles Town on October 1st, finishing four lengths ahead of his peers. If she continues to progress as indicated by her last two works, she should be pointed towards a race in a matter of weeks.

10/09/2011
Quest forCandy records great work.

Bret Calhoun took some of the pressure off of Quest for Candy and she seems to be responding well. On Tuesday morning Candy lit up the track going a half mile in 47.64, ranking fourth of 27 at the distance. This work was better than any other two-year-old to work that day. She will most likely stretch out for her next work and hopefully continue to move forward in her training as she moves towards her debut.

10/01/2011
Quest forCandy continues to build towards her first start

Candy continues to train at Remington, recording an easy half mile this past week. Bret slowed down the pressure on her and did not ask for much out of this recent work. We will see if she can build nicely for a start a little later this Fall.

09/18/2011
Quest forCandy is doing well and looks fit. The Calhoun training team have decided to back off the pace on her a little bit as she seems to be not posting quite as good of works as she could. Transitioning from a very hot summer to the intensity and pressure of being at the track for the first time might be putting some stress on her. We will increase the interval between her works and back off pushing her to race in the next 21 days and shoot for something more likely 6-8 weeks out.

Her Sire Candy Ride continues to hold steady among the top sires with performers like Twirling Candy shown here in the $1MM Pacific Classic last month.

Quest for Candy Records First Official Work

Quest for Candy was sent out in a five furlong work on Monday and ranked 5th of 17 at the distance, covering the 5/8ths of a mile in 101.64. The staff at Twin Oaks felt like she could run all day, and it looks like Bret plans to point her at distance based on a first work at 5/8ths. This filly remains petite on the outside, but it looks like the heart and lungs on the inside are pretty big.

Candy received her identification tattoo on Tuesday and is one step closer to racing.

09/03/2011
Quest forCandy is training well at Remington Park

Candy shipped to Remington Park last week and has settled in nicely. According to Jay, Bret's assistant, she is moving well on the track and is progressing nicely. She will receive her under-lip tattoo this Tuesday and then begin to record official works.

08/30/2011
As much as we wanted to be patient with this filly, she simply demanded to get to the race track. Thus, on Tuesday of this week, Quest for Candy made her way to Remington Park. She joins Bret's stable and will immediately begin training once she has settled in to her new surroundings.

We had thought about holding her back for the Fair Grounds meet, but she has advanced so nicely that we needed to give her a chance to run. Eddie Milligan has been delighted with the desire this filly has shown to just keep running. He has been pushing her through half-mile and 5/8th-mile works and once she hits the finish line she just seems to keep on going. We will look forward to seeing what she has to offer in October.

08/20/2011
Quest forCandy completes second gate work and is headed for Remington Park

Candy simply is doing to well to hold back, so we are sending her up to Remington Park this week. Bret typically takes 30 to 50 days to race prep his new two-year-olds, so my guess is Candy will be racing in October.

08/13/2011
After several good performances breezing, Eddie Milligan worked Candy from the gate for the first time this week. The initial work involves a hand launch, or hand opening, of the gate. Milligan said she worked very well and continues to move very well. The summer heat has prevented her from gaining much weight, but she is maintaining which is about as good as one could hope for at 100+ for 40 days in a row.

08/06/2011
Quest forCandy has progressed from two-minute licks to to 3/8th mile breezes and continues to move forward. One of her owners visited Twin Oaks last Saturday and found that she was bedded down by noon. It sounds like our girl knows how to beat the heat.

Her sire, Candy Ride, received another on track endorsement as Sidney's Candy won the Fourstardave Handicap, as reported in Thoroughbred Times on July 31st:

Sidney’s Candy cruised uncontested on the lead in the $150,000 Fourstardave Handicap (G2) and he made his opponents pay with a facile front-running score on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course.

The win lifted the Candy Ride (Arg) colt past the seven-figure plateau in career earnings as Sidney’s Candy improved to seven wins from 14 career starts and $1,043,560 in purse earnings. Sidney’s Candy made his first start for new trainer Todd Pletcher and owners WinStar Farm and Rubio B. Stable a memorable one, earning his first win of the year after a pair of runner-up finishes in Southern California for previous trainer John Sadler, for whom the colt won five graded stakes, including the 2010 Santa Anita Derby (G1).

07/30/2011
Quest forCandy started the month galloping, but has wrapped up July with two breezes at 3/8ths of a mile. According to Eddie Milligan at Twin Oaks Training Center, she has worked very well and is progressing nicely. The staff is taking it easy on her and all of the horses right now as the heat has been punishing. She is looking good though and continues to grow.

One of her half brothers won earlier in the month. A filly named Electric Elise, by Stephen Got Even under her second dam has been lighting up the workout records at Woodbine, most recently recording a half mile in 46.40 ranking 1/22.

We are not in a rush with this filly and will monitor where she takes us as we enter the Fall. Ultimately, she could race at Remington or could be tuned up and in her prime when the Fair Grounds meet starts. We will see.

07/23/2011
Quest for Candy two-minute licks.  Candy was sent out for her first two-minute-lick this week, covering 3/8ths of a mile. Recall a "two-minute-lick" is a training run at a two minute mile pace. According to Eddie Milligan she moved nicely and has continued to hit the ground very well through her training. The heat is tough these days, but she seems to be handling it well. She grew up a little bit during the time we turned her out and continues to progress in a nice fashion.

07/16/2011
Quest for Candy continues in her training syllabus.  Candy is training daily and should be two-minute-licking very soon. Eddie Milligan will have to build her up to a consistent breeze schedule and school her in the gates for several weeks as well. This is a tough time of year to prepare a horse because you don't want to push them so hard they drop weight, yet you need them fit. We will work her early as much as possible to avoid some of the heat and keep her head in the feed bin.

07/09/2011
Quest for Candy picks up right where she left off on the training track.  Candy is back to building strength and conditioning. She has been galloping for the past several days and will pick up the pace as the month of July continues. All looks good.

07/02/2011
Quest for Candy comes in from the fields and re-enters the fields of fire.  Candy concluded her four week summer break and is now back under saddle and galloping for the Twin Oaks staff. She has remained fairly fit, so the team will probably press forward with regaining some base of conditioning, then move towards breezing and gate training. She looks to be racing this Fall as planned.

06/29/2011
Quest for Candy sells out in less than one month.  The limited shares available in the Candy Ride Filly introduced just last month were quickly gobbled up as many jumped on their own quest for candy. Our filly has finished a four week rest and rehabilitation period at Twin Oaks and went back under saddle this week. She is looking great and will embark on a training syllabus that should have her race-track ready by this fall.

When owning a filly one is always more mindful of pedigree enhancements as the potential residual value of that horse can increase, assuming she performs at a respectable level on the track. Quest for Candy’s sire, Candy Ride, continues to be ranked among the top 30 sires in 2011. In addition, his 4-year-old, Grade I-winning son, Sidney’s Candy, was purchased early in the month by Winstar Farms to be raced and eventually retired as a stallion. Another four-year-old colt, Twirling Candy, captured headlines as he won the Grade II Californian Stakes. This was his seventh win of nine starts and pushed his earnings to $684,900. Even closer to our Candy’s bloodline, her half brother, Gamberoni, recorded another win in Woodbine this month.

We should have a clearer indication of our plans regarding Quest for Candy as the summer progresses.

06/25/2011
Quest for Candy continues her "girl's trip."  Our filly continues to enjoy her downtime in the main pasture at Twin Oaks. She received a nice pedigree boost this week as her half brother won another race on June 19th at Woodbine.

06/18/2011
Quest for Candy continues her fun-in-the-sun break as she frolics in the large main pasture at Twin Oaks. She is looking great. The time has already seemed to decompress the anxieties brought on by the pressure of her recent two-year-old in training sale and the transportation associated with it. She will return to training in the next two weeks.

Our Filly continues to see her pedigree boosted by active racers. A three-year-old filly, Electric Elise, out of her second dame, Exhiliriation broke her maiden at Presque Isle Downs on June 2nd, and returned as the favorite in a non-winners of one race other than maiden or claiming on June 16th. She finished third in that $41,000 allowance race. Our filly's four-year-old, half brother, Gamberoni, by Langhfuhr tries to improve his record and is racing on June 19th at Woodbine.

06/11/2011
Candy Ride Filly Enjoying the Fields of Texas.  Quest for Candy is back at Twin Oaks and in the process of spending a few weeks decompressing from the recent sale. She looks great and is in a large pasture with four-year-old Stormy Atlantic Filly and a two-year-old Mineshaft Filly. After this brief "refreshening" she will be right back in training

06/04/2011
Eddie Milligan said the newest addition to our stable, the Candy Ride Filly made it back to his location in Murchison, TX and looked great. We have turned her out for about three weeks in the main field in front of his property with two other fillies. She is mentally sharp, looks content, and is physically sound. Aft this break, we plan to move on with her and get her prepped for the start of her racing career.

05/30/2011
Introducing New Filly - Quest for Candy.  Ther are an elite few select stallions that are in vogue currently and with good reason…they are producing runners. Names like Tapit, Indian Charlie, Giant’s Causeway, and certainly Candy Ride come to mind. Given the opportunity to buy a two-year-old Candy Ride filly that looks to be the real deal was too “sweet” of an opportunity for us to refuse.

We had an inside track on this filly, as she has been in training with Eddie Milligan at his Twin Oaks Training Center since her purchase as a yearling last September. During the past several months this filly has really filled out and developed a very well-balanced, athletic build. She is a May foal and still has some growing in front of her, but that simply adds to the promise of what is to come because she is already quite a package. Eddie told Mike Rose early on that this filly always wants to go forward. If running in company she wants to lead, if in a group she wants to advance. Twin Oaks consigned the $170,000 sale topper in the Fasig-Tipton Texas sale and Milligan said that horse was the top of the class, but he was quick to state, “the Candy Ride filly is not far behind.”

During the Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale she recorded a very respectable 10 3/5th seconds one-eighth mile breeze and galloped out an additional furlong in 11.55 (a “gallop out” time in the top 5 of nearly 200 horses to also breeze that day). In retrospect she probably accelerated a little too quickly into the work and consumed energy that may have lowered her time a tick or two. Take a look at her breeze by clicking here and you will see she kept to task through the entire breeze and showed no desire to slow down.

Her sire, Candy Ride, produced more Grade 1 stakes winning horses than any other sire in 2010. The foals racing in 2011 are only his fourth crop and he has already established himself as a top-25 ranked sire. He only raced six times in his career, but won every race and accumulated nearly three-quarter million dollars in earnings in the process. His stud fee has jumped nearly four-fold to $40,000 as he has produced stone-cold runner after runner. The nick formed from the Candy Ride- sons/grandsons of Mr. Prospector combination is a high-rated cross, receiving an “A” grade from both eNicks and TrueNicks’ rating criteria. If you are looking for a horse from a proven sire, race winning and producing mare, and an outstanding nick, you do not have to look much further.

This filly is smart, has a keen, very aware eye, understands her scope of work, and maintains a great demeanor around the stables. She is the professional individual you want to own as a racehorse. Her conformation, athleticism, intellect, and pedigree make her the total package. Limited shares remain available in her, if you want to learn more visit the current opportunities section of the RCR website.
