Lone Star: Calhoun focuses on future after reaching 2,000 victories

By: Byron King

As the leading trainer at Lone Star Park the past two years, trainer Bret Calhoun has made many
trips to the track's winner's circle. He just wasn't there Thursday night, although it proved a
milestone day, when favored Forty Winks won the third race to give him 2,000 victories in his
career.

Calhoun didn't reach that lofty number by dwelling on the past, or even simply eyeing the
present. He, like most successful trainers and people, keeps looking to the future.
So Calhoun celebrated Thursday night in relative quiet in Ocala, Fla., watching the race on his
iPad, after spending the day looking at young horses to potentially purchase at the upcoming
OBS April 2-year-olds-in-training sale. PDF Read Article>>>

Calhoun Records Win No. 2,000

Brett CalhounTrainer Bret Calhoun won the 2,000th race of his career April 19
at Lone Star Park when Forty Winks won a claiming race under
Clifton Berry (VIDEO).

"It's pretty exciting that it happened there, at my home track," said
Calhoun, a 47-year-old native of Grand Prairie, Texas. "It's been
a long time. You never expect to win that many races. It's a
significant amount. It feels good."

Calhoun has been in the top 10 of the trainer standings at Lone
Star for 12 of 16 seasons. He was leading trainer there in 2010
and 2011 and has amassed earnings of over $10.9 million at the
Grand Prairie track.  PDF Read Article>>>

BY MARY SIMON
VALID EXPECTATIONS remained king of Texas, Storm and a Half continued his dominion over Arkansas, and Desert God again exerted a potent influence
in New Mexico, but not all was status quo in the Southwest in
2011.
A new generation came to the fore in Louisiana and Oklahoma during the year, and a spate of promising young sires have settled in the region for 2012—among them, Closing Argument, Toccet, Don't Get Mad, Taste of Paradise, Read
the Footnotes, and Western Expression. PDF Read Article

Will work for food.  Standing on a street corner under a hooded sweatshirt and shakin a rusted tomatoes can for loose coin.  It was that close. Down to a handful of horses, trainer Bret Calhoun had been down so long it looked like up..

Lakewood couple share passion for thoroughbreds
By Lucy Higginbotham

The Rose FamilyChurchill Downs. Sleek thoroughbreds. Standing in the winner’s circle. They seem to be the sort of exotic things that Other People do, not something close to home, perhaps even right next door. And yet, for Lakewood residents Mike and Summer Rose, these are just part of normal life. The horses racing down the track at Lone Star Park are as familiar to them as the car racing up their driveway on Tokalon.
As founders of Royal Colors Racing, LLC, this young couple provides anyone with the opportunity to actually own part of a racehorse. “Is it risky? Sure, like a lot of investments, but it’s a lot more fun to watch YOUR horse race than to watch the stock market,” Mike said. With his experience in other limited
partnerships, Rose saw firsthand how managing thoroughbred partnerships was done. Then he decided he could do it better.
